Krishna is an Ayam Cemani rooster, an extraordinary Indonesian breed known for its nearly complete black pigmentation. From his comb and beak to his feathers, skin, and even internal tissues, the depth of black is so remarkable that he almost appears unreal.
After discovering the breed, I tracked down a small farm specializing in exotic chickens and traveled there to photograph Krishna. At one remarkable moment, he rose to his full height and puffed out his feathers in a magnificent display of confidence and dominance. This natural behavior, almost theatrical in its execution, created a striking portrait of form, texture, and presence.
Photographing Krishna under controlled studio conditions allowed me to use high-speed strobes with exceptionally short flash durations, freezing the movement of his feathers and preserving extraordinary detail. The result reveals the intricate textures and sculptural qualities of a bird that almost defies belief.
